Article by: Mlungisi Zwelihle Gumede

In order to write a proper essay that will attract the attention of the reader or the marker you need to write your essay using the following steps by MR M.Z Gumede who is a young growing historian in South Africa. He identified five steps that one nees to follow when writing an essay.

  • Read the question
  • Identify key words
  • Understand key words
  • List subtopics at the back of your script or rough book for you to remember
  • Start writing
Your essay is made up of three components that need to part of your essay if they are not part of your writing that type of writing could not be considered as an essay. And these components are:

  1. Introduction
  2. Body
  3. Conclusion

                                       Introduction
In your introduction you introduce your essay. As the word introduction comes from the word introduce. Here you give a dirrect answer to the question asked by the examiner. For example if you are being asked whether you agree or disagree with the statement, simple indicate you agree if you agree and or disagree if you are against the statement in your introduction. You need also to mention points to prove that statement wrong or right. You need to state point relevant to the question of which you are going to discuss about in the body or content of your essay. Do not forget to identify what type of historical writing you need to use to write your essay. For instance, Narriative history, Didactic history and or genetic history. Examiner usually use the following words to ask their questions: Elaborate, Explain; To what extent do you agree; Motitvate; Distinguish; Compare and contrast.
When you elaborate you fully explain, explain you discuss about the topic. If the question says to what extent do you agree, here they want to know how much you agree with the statement, you need to indicate that you agree to great extent or larger extent if you disagree or you not fully agree you need to say to a lesser you agree to a lesser extent.
Compare, here you state and explain the similarities and differences. Compare and contrast, you compare two or more things where you state what is the same and what is not the same. Please do not forget that you need not to include all information in your introduction.

                                  Body or Content
Acording to Mlungisi Zwelihle Gumede Body of your essay is the back bone of your essay which link introduction with the conclusion without it there could be no essay. Body is made up more than one paragraphs and paragraphs are made up of sentences which are made up of words. Paragraphs have also their own introduction called Topic Sentence which introduce the main topic you are going to talk about in the body of your essay. Small Body called Suporting details is also a part which form your paragraphs; here you go deeper and deeper discussing the main point or topic. Concluding sentence also called Closing Sentence is the last sentence which formulate your paragraph. It summarizes the main idea of your paragraph, Answer the question if you are writing history related essay. Do not forget  to answer question like,: what happened, where it happened (place), when it happened (Time), why it happened (Reason) , and how it happened ( step by step of the occurence of the historical event). Please note that you need to keep these questions on your mind as they are not asked by the examiner.

                                            Conclusion
In your essay's conclusion you need not to include similar information that you included/talked about in your introduction and you need not to state new information. Here you need to summarize the entire essay and you answer the question asked. Some other time you need to raise your opinion based on the topic discussed above.
